Being safe while crossing the street
Here are some ways to be safe while crossing the street:
- Use a crosswalk whenever it is available
- Cross at the corner or at an intersection, meaning where two roads meet.
- Stop at the edge of parked cars, the curb, or other vehicles.
- Look LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT, forward and backward before crossing
- Cross when there are no cars coming, and keep looking left and right.
- Walk, don’t run or dart, into the street.
- Look for signs that a car is about to move (rear lights, exhaust smoke, sound of motor, wheels turning).
- Walk alertly; use your eyes and your ears to increase your safety.
- Be very careful if you’re using your cell phone. You can get easily distracted by talking, texting, or listening to music.
- Stand clear of buses, hedges, parked cars, or other big objects before you cross so drivers can see you.
- Obey traffic signals, like signs and lights.
- Watch and listen for vehicles approaching.
