Taxis and App-Based Rideshare

Taxis

Taxis are an example of “private transportation”. For a fee, called a “fare”, a taxi can bring you where you need to go at any time of the day. The benefit of taxi service is that it is flexible, but the drawback is that the cost might be too high to rely on it for frequent trips.

App-Based Rideshare

One of the most popular ways to get from one place to another is by using a rideshare app such as Uber or Lyft. These are transportation services provided by people who use their own vehicles to give rides. Rideshare can be ordered at the time you need a ride, or you can reserve a ride for a specific pick-up time.

Rideshare options may not be available in smaller communities or in rural areas. The cost of a ride depends on how far you are going and if it is a busy time of the day.

Ordering a ride is done through an app on your phone and that is how it is paid for as well. Rideshare has many safety features such as cameras in the cars and the ability to have your family “track” your trips to make sure you get places with no issues.

The 4 Safety Rules

  1. Verify the car’s make and model.
  2. Check the license plate number.
  3. Match the driver’s face to their app photo.
  4. Share your trip status/tracking with family.

Here are some tips for using rideshare:

  • Give plenty of time to get connected to a ride. There may be a lag between when you request a ride and when a driver is available.
  • If you know what time you need to get picked up, schedule a ride in advance.
  • Always make sure that you are getting into the correct car with the right driver. The make and model of the car, the license plate, and a picture of the driver will be shown on the app once the trip is verified.
  • Be sure that your pick-up location is correct.
  • Share your trip status with others so they know when you are taking a ride and where you are going.
