Public Transportation

In many communities there are transportation services that all people can use. These are not only for people with disabilities but for anyone who needs to get places without needing to use a car.

For example, a city might offer bus service where riders can get to work or other destinations for a fee. Buses probably won’t bring you directly to work but you can explore the “bus route” that has a stop close to your destination. Keep in mind that the times of the day a bus runs will depend on the city and route. It is important to plan ahead and be aware of schedules to avoid problems.

Activity
Map Your Public Transit Commute

Objective: Use the Gohio Commute tool to find a reliable public transportation route to your current or potential workplace.

Instructions:

  • Access the Tool: Open your web browser on your phone or computer and visit https://gohiocommute.com.
  • Enter Your Details: Type in your home address as your starting point and the address of your workplace (or a business you are applying to) as your destination.
  • Find the Closest Stop: Review the suggested public transit routes. Because buses typically will not drop you off directly at your workplace's front door, look for the bus route that offers a stop closest to your final destination.
  • Verify the Schedule: Check the operating hours for that specific route. Bus schedules depend on the city and the route itself, so you must confirm that the bus runs during the times you need to arrive at work and head home.
  • Plan Your Timing: Calculate how long the total trip will take so you can plan ahead and avoid problems being late for your shift.
  • Plan the Final Stretch: If your bus stop is a few blocks away from your workplace, you can use map apps on your smartphone to find the best walking or biking route for the remainder of your trip.
